Wichita teen fatally shot boyfriend during argument, police say

Colton Sellers and his wife were bathing their two children when shots rang out Wednesday near their home in southeast Wichita.

One bullet shattered a window on their apartment. Another went through the window frame, hit their wall and was later found on their couch. Soon after the shooting stopped, Sellers said he looked out the front door and saw a man on the ground maybe 15 feet away and two women running away.

“There was already a group of people around him … giving him CPR,” Sellers said.

Rina Han Nguyen, 18, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of first-degree murder and criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied dwelling in connection to the fatal shooting of her boyfriend, 22-year-old Amare Holt.

Wichita police Lt. Jeff Gilmore said the two got into an argument before 5:45 p.m. at Nguyen’s apartment in the 1500 block of South Battin, near Harry and Oliver.

Holt was walking out the front door of the apartment when Nguyen pulled out a handgun and started shooting, Gilmore said. Holt was hit multiple times and collapsed across the street. First responders found Holt in critical condition and transported him to an area hospital, where he died at around 6:35 p.m., police reports show.

Gilmore said that after the shooting Nguyen left in a vehicle and later returned, at which point she was arrested without incident. Police said they are not looking for any other suspects in the case.

Gilmore said there is an open case of domestic violence between Nguyen and Holt from December.

The killing is the eighth criminal homicide in 2020.
