Several Wichita area schools have canceled Thursday classes as a cold front with sub-freezing temperatures is expected to create slippery conditions after a winter storm dropped snow and rain across the region.
The National Weather Service office in Wichita reported several cities in the area recorded at least 2 inches of snow from a winter storm on Wednesday, with some towns receiving up to 4 inches. The snowfall was followed by a cold front that is expected to turn the wet slush on roads, sidewalks and parking lots into ice. Wind chills will be below zero degrees in some areas.
Wednesday’s snowy road conditions preceded a Wichita Public Schools bus crash on I-35 as elementary school children were headed to a field trip at the state Capitol. Minor injuries were reported to 16 students and one teacher. Also along the Kansas Turnpike, an ambulance crashed after the driver lost control on the slushy road.
